Forget Sin City, San Diego is America's Playground. Las Vegas may have the lights and casinos, but San Diego has everything you could dream of to enrich your life. World-class museums, theme parks, the beach and for some thrill-seekers, plenty of off-road opportunities. Toyota Carlsbad is quite fond of the last item on that list. When you get the call for some off-road excitement, that is when you answer in the 2020 Toyota 4Runner.

You have long known the 4Runner to be a great option when exploring the unpaved portions of San Diego County. But with so many trim levels in the 2020 lineup, which versions are the best for tackling a more rugged terrain from San Marcos to Oceanside? Toyota Carlsbad wants to break down each trim level to let you know which is ideal for your expedition off the paved road.

First things first, you will be hard-pressed to find a more off-road capable SUV than the 2020 Toyota 4Runner. Fewer still offer as many trim levels worthy of finding the dirt path. Each trim level is equipped with enough power and equipment to get you from point A-to-point B with confidence and precision. When it comes to the Toyota 4Runner, almost every trim level can get you where you want to go.

4Runner Trim Levels

  • 4Runner SR5
  • 4Runner SR5 Premium
  • 4Runner TRD Off-Road
  • 4Runner Limited
  • 4Runner TRD Pro

Each trim level of the 2020 4Runner is powered by a muscular 4.0-liter V6, pumping out 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. Rear-wheel drive is the standard, but four-wheel drive is available for every trim. Hill Start Assist Control and Downhill Assist Control give you an assist when your environment isn't of the flat variety.

What sets each trim level apart is the equipment. For Example, the base trim, SR5, includes skid plates and a power outlet in the cargo area. The SR5 Premium adds a scenic sunroof. Those are great features to have for a day trip to the desert for a picnic. Although it is capable of expanding the road options, it isn't the best candidate for off-road traveling.

Once you get past the base, the off-road world is your virtual oyster. One step up from the SR5 Premium, the TRD Off-Road, and beyond, and you are on your way to an exciting day. You'll find the TRD Off-Road contains standard four-wheel drive with Active Traction Control, Multi-Terrain Select off-road driving settings and CRAWL control and a locking rear differential. That spells adventure to us.

The special edition 4Runner Venture is built from the same cloth as the TRD Off-Road and adds even more features. A Yakima "MegaWarrior" roof-mounted cargo basket allows you to store even more items, like your wakeboard for the dunes, grill, or whatever supplies you need to accomplish the next item on your adventure bucket list. A back rear spoiler and 17-inch dark gray alloy wheels give it a distinct look as you climb over rocks and sand.

For the ultimate off-roading experience, serious drivers opt for the TRD Pro. The name says it all. It takes all the features on the TRD Off-Road and takes them to another level. The upgrades include 2.5-inch Fox Internal Bypass Shocks, TRD Springs suspension, and a front skid plate. You get additional ground clearance for an optimal entry angle when climbing. It rides on 17-inch TRD all-terrain wheels.

Active four-wheel drive and loads of performance-tuned equipment make each trim level of the 2020 Toyota 4Runner the ideal SUV when the paved roads can no longer contain you. With so many destinations across North County to explore, you need to be driving the 2020 4Runner to get there.
